18 july 2012 update

VLAWWWWWG

Warrior Dash 20 Aug and Iron Girl Sprint Tri 27 Aug – dizzang! I am slightly modifying Hal Higdon’s 8 week training plan with a load of brick workouts.  The Fitness Collaborative Hotter than Hades Virtual Half Marathon is also underway.  Go ahead and register… you have until 15 August to finish 13.1 miles to be eligible for some sweet prizes.

Three things to update from my post last week:

  1. I did not get sick. I was mostly recovered by the time I made it home from EVO.
  2. I had a skin analysis done and apparently my acne is not food allergy-related but rather hormone-related due to its zone and the type of acne it is.  Yay having babies… [sarcasm]
  3. The clean and detoxifying eating went well for the most part until the last day.  I gave myself the first day back to eat post-conference goodies then went on legumes and grains as well as cashed in a nice The Organic Dish gift certificate.  Then my monthly came in with a vengeance and I let myself enjoy mini-cupcakes at a friend’s Harry Potter movie theater birthday extravaganza, then a Cuban pressed sammich the next day, and a piece of coffee cake while watching the Womens’ World Cup.  It has not been an avalanche off the wagon but next week will be a bit more concentrated unless I feel calorie deprived from the Higdon workouts.

With that said this will be a good legume and grain week.  As part of my emotional eating post process I was looking at photos of some of our favorite meals and dang I want to re-create some.

Mung Bean Dahl, Black Beans with Tomatillo Salsa, Hop n’ John, Gallo Pinto con Crema y Patacones, Strawberry Gazpacho… this feels like a tasty week to play.  Lunch will be leftovers and salad.  Breakfasts will will be soaked wheat berries with eggs, smoothies, and steel cut oats.

For this week I made two requests in my vlog:

  1. Join in my emotional eating dialogue – offer resources if you have them.  This discussion is starting from a place of compassion.
  2. Please vote for me (Kia Ruiz) for a Refuel with Chocolate Milk grant.  You can vote daily and do not need to register for anything on their site.  Voting is open from 15 July to 15 August.

As I alluded… IF I win one of the 10 grants I have some really fun plans for the money.  Can you guess what they are?

What has been your favorite Grunt Style workout? If you aren’t doing his workouts what has been your strength training routine?

I have not been doing Grunt Style workouts but I am a Crossfitter. I love jumping burpees (make sure when you plank out you get your chest and body down to the ground before jumping up) and mountain climbers (easier on the chest for this breast feeding mom). Here is a pic of me at Crossfit so you see the other kind of stuff I do (I have a solid background in power lifting from college sports – this is with 185)

This post is sponsored by Grunt Style and I’m writing this to be entered into a giveaway hosted by Mamavation and sponsored by Grunt Style.

Have a wonderful week everyone.

  6. My skin has never been the same since having The Things. I didn’t have acne in high school for Pete’s sake, but as a 37 year old woman I do. Grr.

    Have a great week, Kia.

  7. Oh, my goodness! That is a massive set of weights. You truly are inspirational. Yeah, chicks can be strong, feminine and beautiful (inside & out).

This year I have put tomatillos on my list of foods to learn to use and enjoy. I have never made my own salsa verde. I love reading your posts because it reminds me to work on clean eating and just striving to be healthy in general. Thanks!

  8. first thing gotta say “wow” love the pic. When I was much younger, I kindof dreamed of being a power lifter, but never did anything about it. I always thought it was so cool. Now I am just trying to do some sort of strength training. Your menu sounds yummy. Gotta go check out your emotional eating link now…something I am trying to focus a lot more on myself.

  9. Warrior Dash. Really? The guy I work with did that last month. Now he is doing Tough Mudder. Love seeing your face on the weekly basis and now you that I stop by your blog (since you un-spammed me)Have a wonderful time. XO

  10. Kia, you never seem to amaze and inspire me. The picture of you with the weights is a bit terrifying (in the impressive way). You’re just.. I can’t even. You’re amazing. You’re superwoman. That’s all I can say to that.

  11. Holy moly! Remind me never to tick you off! You’re a power house! Great job Kia! I’m inspired!
