mamavation monday 6 september 2010

remote vloggity from baby’s first dressed up evening out 😉

I am down another 2.5 pounds for a solid 168. That is 9 pounds under pre-pregnancy weight at 12 weeks post-partum.

All is not well in Kia-land though. I am feeling a bit worn. Don’t tell my midwife but I realized I have not been taking any vitamins since we moved. I have been eating real food and not thinking about it. However between exclusively breastfeeding my babe, supplementing another babe, and 1/2 marathon training my body is feeling a little worn.

The best news is that the babe I am supplementing for is putting on weight. Her family, me, and her medical caregiver are over the moon about this news. However this means that something is going on with her mother and her mother’s milk supply. I will keep on supplementing her while her mom’s thyroid and a few other things are examined.

I have no qualms about backing off my working out so that my body stays in top form to feed my babe and the other babe. If I can’t do all three then it is an easy choice that the two kids are my priority.

My goal this week… get back on my vitamin train as well as rest as much as possible (go to bed earlyish) and meal plan.

Now about calories + food…

Last week I was helping out at the Aflac Irongirl sprint triathlon. One day I was helping with goody bags and naturally got a lot of goodies for myself (there were extras). One item I grabbed a few of were these corn thins that have corn, sunflower oil, and sea salt – that is it. They are a product of Australia. I was looking at the nutrition information and the category for calories is listed as “Energy.” In the U. S. we list the category as “Calories.”

This struck me as simple and awesome. Calories are ENERGY. It is easy to lose sight of this fact and treat calories as some removed entity that we fear, loathe, etc. in our quest to eat fewer of some and more of others. Why do we not think of them as simply energy in a country where we are battling an obesity epidemic? We should not have a complex relationship with calories and I think relating to them in terms of energy is one way to help reconcile our love/hate relationship with them. All right, enough of that soapbox.

Congrats to Greta for SOTW! Also look at all the leadership we have about these days, congrats ladies. This week’s show will feature Allana Pratt and the topic of our relationship with our bodies. This week’s blogging carnival is sponsored by Chef’s Requested. See ya then.

  1. Babe looks so cute! 🙂

Congrats on the weight loss, but don't over do it. It's easy for some to lose a lot of weight while breastfeeding because you're using too many calories. I lost like 10 pounds in 2 weeks, then my milk started to dry up. Just a heads up 🙂

Gotta get in those vitamins, I know they are hard to swallow but you gotta work it in. I graze with my 6 vitamins in the morning otherwise I gag.

Thanks for the tip on the corn thins because I love Fritos, I'll have to see if I can find these.

Take care and have a great week!

  2. Hey Lady! Looks like that little bean is having fun!! He likes big butts too I guess.

Yes, I think your "new attitude" is awesome. You have to be really gentle with your body. It's doing a lot of work (and did a lot of work!) feeding that baby. Give yourself a few months at least of not doing crazy intense workouts and you'll be able to do em later.

Thanks for the congrats!! Also your calorie v. energy. Yes, wouldn't that help us a little as far as our attitudes toward the dreaded calorie? I think it ties in well with Allana Pratt. How are we treating our bodies because of how we feel about them? Things that make you go hmmm.

  3. Adorable!

I admire you for supplementing for another mommy/baby who desires to breastfeed, but can't for whatever reasons.

Good choice. Listen to your body! I've had to do that this week as well! I always notice that I'm worn if I skip a day of my vitamins.

    have a great week!!

Lol. Bodhi loves him some big butts!

Wow Kia! You look so great for being 12 weeks post baby. I wish I would have made better healthy choices during my first pregnancy.

I love that Calories are listed as energy. I will be reminding myself this as I'm looking at nutritioal info.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  5. You look great! Love Bodhi "dancing" at the wedding. My little guy got DOWN at a wedding recently. Baby dancing is the best!

I've stopped counting calories recently and feel so much better about my relationship with food. I know the kinds of things I should be eating and I've started to really learn my body's fullness cues. When I eat foods that are good for me, stop eating just before I feel fool and eat when I'm really hungry (instead of by the clock) good things happen. I've been reaping the results in less stressful weight loss. I feel really good about it.

There was a time when I needed to track and count and wear my heart rate monitor to know the calories that I've burned but now is not that time. 🙂

  6. That should be "full" not "fool". Although I have eaten so much before that I've felt really foolish LOL!

  7. Bodhi is so cute, looks like a good time was had by all!

Very good point about Calories=Energy, and something we all need to think about when we eat too, not just how many calories are in the food but what kind of energy is it going to give us. Lasting energy or quick fleeting energy like from too much sugar.

Since you are feeling run down I suggest you really watch your protein intake. I can't remember if you are vegetarian or not but make sure you are getting plenty of protein and iron. That can zap your energy. You are so conscientious and that is great.

  8. HUGS! Girl I think you just spoke to ME about needing to take care of ME! I too have been feeling a little out of sorts… nursing, training, and well… being Mom/Wife/Friend/SuperWoman! 🙂 I am heading to the cabinet to take my prenatals NOW!!

    You are awesome!! HUGS

**My challenge for YOU this week: Take care of YOU (and your cutie pie) and listen to your body as you train for your half marathon! 🙂

  10. way to go on the weight loss!!! such motivation! And you've heard it once will hear it a million times… hehe… he's freaking adorable! And how exciting about the baby you're helping. You're so amazing kia!

  11. Bodhi is so stinking cute! I want to snuggle him.

Congrats on your loss! You are doing great and totally inspirational.

That is so great that you are helping out another little baby. I had some issues with my first aswell. I just wasn't making enough for her. The second I was able to feed for her first year. Breast milk is so amazing and you have a great supply! Take it easy though with everything.

I like that Australia uses Energy and not calories. I think we all look for calories and get this mental picture in our head that they are bad, but no one goes to look at what is put in the food.

Have a great week and keep that booby milk flowing!!

  13. Oh he is so cute!! And you look fabulous!

I have a picture of my little guy from the wedding we were at in July, all dressed up. Aiden has the biggest smile of his face and no wonder, he was totally grabbing my boob. Gotta love our little men. It starts young 🙂

Definitely get back on the vitamins. You'll feel more energy in a few days once you restore some of the imbalance you might have from not taking them.

  14. Stephen and Amanda O'Dair blog says:

wow you are simply wonderful! Look at you making goals keeping them, and helping others out, Thank you for being you!

  15. Janice - The Fitness Cheerleader says:

You're right, calories are energy. That's why I feel the "100 calorie" snacks misleading. In North America I feel we've become far too obsessed with the numbers on the packaging, and less concerned about the nutritional and energy value of the foods we consume. Thanks for the reminder Kia! You're such an inspiration to us and I'm glad to have "met" you.

  16. The Maniacal Matron - @MMScarlett says:

    Baby is so sweet!!!

I'm not even breastfeeding nor do I have a new baby and I need my vitamins for energy! That is one thing I try to never skip.

You are amazing for supplementing the other baby. Glad that you have enough to share for the other little baby's sake 🙂

  17. I think you are like Mother freakin Theresa for supplementing like that. Wow. Yes, I agree that you need to cool it off a bit. You body is ALREADY working overtime to produce all that milk. I bet you are burning at least 1000 per day doing that. XXOO

Oh, and he's like as cute as a bug!

  18. Wow. You are indeed amazing for supplementing. I hope you are able to get some rest and take care of your body. I do like the idea of energy instead of calories. It changes how you think of what it is and what it does to/for your body.

Best wishes to you and your family this week!

  19. Wow! You ARE incredible! Like some of the others, I HAVE to remind you that if you don't take care of YOU, you won't be in a position to take care of anyone else so hang in there! and take your vitamins!! 🙂 Great job though and continue with your wonderful achievements.

  20. congrats on the weight loss! and not to beat on you here since everyone else has mentioned it..but take care of you, too. I know it's hard. Trust me. But keep at it!

  21. I am so amazed at you — how wonderful for that other mom and her baby to have you in their lives; yes, those babies are draining your body so get back on those vitamins!

I wish, wish, wish that I'd known about mamavation . . . or at least been in contact with "healthy" mamas when I was pregnant and breastfeeding. If I am ever blessed with another pregnancy and chance to breast-feed, I am going to follow the example you have given us, Kia.

    (CONGRATS on your post-partum loss)

  22. Wow! You know, congrats on the weight loss, but also CONGRATS on that big picture knowledge that you have to make adjustments. I love your open giving heart. Very cool, mama.

  23. You are so awesome! Congrats on fitting into that pre-pre-pregnancy dress, that is fabulous. You look amazing, even if you are worn out. You have such a great head on your shoulders!

Also, I LOVE the end of your vlog! 🙂

  24. Hehe… I am a chemical engineer So I have always thought of calories as energy… and actually, our packages are really kilo-calories, so those 100cal snack packs, they're really 100,000 calories!! hehe I love being nerdy!

Good job on your loss this week and I am super proud that you are helping that other family and their baby! LOTS of good Karma for you!

  25. HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY and congrats on getting back to a smaller size clothes . the baby is adorable and hope you have a great week hugs

  26. Heather @ Not a DIY Life says:

Yes, you need your prenatals!! Especially because you're breastfeeding AND supplementing for another babe. Girl, get on that! I still take prenatals and LB has been weaned for 9 months.

And Dang! You look amazing in that dress! Rawr!! Sounds like you have a good handle on what's going on with your body and what you need to do for training. I know the fires are seriously limiting you right now. Stay safe and kiss Bodhi's chubby cheeks for me!
