zakumi

I had a startling revelation a couple of weeks ago… my due date is 18 June 2010… the FIFA World Cup finals tournament is 11 June – 11 July 2010. There is quite an overlap there. I half wish that my due date was later so I could be in the final stretch of pregnancy, chill out, watch the tourney and then have the baby. Babies don’t work like that, and I would prefer not to be pregnant in the hot summer month of July. I can only imagine my little one will be born on 12 June since that is the first day the USA plays (v. England and the limey Brits are going down!) and any thoughts I have of futbol will be vanquished by my overwhelming love of my little one.

The day I had the timing revalation I started calling my little one Zakumi. Zakumi is the FIFA World Cup mascot for this tournament. Thus the fetal nickname is Zakumi. A Zakumi Bean if we get silly. Now that we are telling people we refer to it as “spilling the Zakumi beans” for others.

Here is a list of fetal nicknames culled from UrbanBaby message boards and I think ours fits in:

Moms:
Cookie Pie Face
Squirt
Rice (“b/c the lady who did my ultrasound said, ‘like a piece of rice'”)
Tic Tac (“b/c when I had my first US that’s what it looked like – a tic tac w/a heartbeat”)
Lemon
Bean (“In the first few weeks, I’d talk to my belly ‘grow, bean, grow'”)
The Bunny
Wiggle Worm

Dads:
Homer
Buddy (“but he also calls the cat ‘Buddy'”)
The Little Nipper (“we’ve subconsciously shortened it to ‘Nip'”)
Peaches (“He used to call me that, but has transferred it to the baby…At least it’s not ‘Apple.'”)
The Baby {“he’s too superstitious to call it anything else”)
Skeletor
The Alien
Hong Kong Phooey
