Fitness Clothing Sin?

It is not a crime against fashion, but a crime nonetheless.

I intentionally got a piece of clothing too small, but it may be too too small.

I won a Born Fit Oxford Running Skirt from Spry magazine a couple of weeks ago. I easily fit in a size medium skirt these days from that company. So I figured I would order a small.

It is a girl sin against yourself to order anything but your true size but my intention seemed great.

1. By this time last year we had at least THREE snow storms where I live. The season to wear running skirts is about over. As it is this weekend we will be in the 60s. By the time I can reasonably break out the running skirt again it will be MAY 2011.

2. I am progressing very well with my fitness/health journey. I plan to be in the company’s small by running skirt season next year.

The skirt arrived yesterday. It is really nice. I love the colors, the feel of the fabric, the thickness of the fabric, the construction… it is a really nice skirt. After dinner I was telling my husband how I ordered a small knowing it won’t fit right now and then I found this note:

Hello!

Congratulations on winning the BornFit Skort! Unfortunately we don’t have a S in the Sassy Oxford Skort. BornFit does run a size big so we sent you an XS instead. Test it out and if it doesn’t work then we will figure something else out! Thanks.

Best,

The BornFit Gang

Um, ooops. I read the note to my husband as I was laughing. I held the skirt up to me thinking there would be no way I would wear this. My husband then said, “it looks like it could fit you now.” Man that is some super lycra if it can. But I went on to amuse him and went in the bedroom to put it on.

His comment after was that I have some work to do but you can totally wear it for this spring. He went on to tease me that I wanted to challenge myself but that the fate gods threw down the gauntlet for a better challenge.

As it is right now the skirt fits tight, but the shorts definitely pinch on my chubby thighs. I would scare you if I put this on and took a close-up picture IMHO.

What would you do? Return it for a small in a different skirt? Keep it and work towards wearing it, possibly giving it away to someone smaller if it does not work out? What are your thoughts on this? Was this really a fitness clothing sin? Or does acquiring a size smaller for one piece of fitness clothing actually count as motivation vs. bad planning?

  1. Personally, I think you have to ask yourself first – what would my body look like at that size? Is a XS the picture of myself at a healthy, fit, & happy place? If so, then YES – it's great motivation. If not… return and exchange for reality.

  2. Great point. The XS is a reasonable goal. I would not have worn it around my husband if it was too absolutely hideous on me.

  3. I'm not sure I even wore an XS when I was 105, but I wasn't an exerciser then, so i have no idea. I just starved. THose skorts are so cute!! I dunno…I think as long as it's a healthy thing to reach for, that's cool. Like Momma_Oz said.

I like what Mozzie had to say and I agree. If that size is healthy for you, then keep it. I have a dress that I am keeping for that reason. I don't know that I'll ever wear it in public (so out of style!) but my goal is to fit into it again.

I say keep it, unless the arrangement with Born Fit is that you keep the XS and they'll send you a S. I like them a little small so that the legs of the boy shorts underneath don't slide up 🙂

  6. I buy smaller clothing ALL the time and so far I've worked my way into every single size. I don't usually go 2 sizes down but it was free, it looks OK now and you have 8 months until your public debut. I'd keep it!

  7. My running skirt I wore through pregnancy is now so big that I chaffed the heck out of my thighs when I wore it 6 weeks ago due to loose fabric. I agree w/ Janice about wearing the running skirts snug!

  8. What an adorable skirt! I need to update my wardrobe if I ever decide to start jogging again.

Yes, keep it if it is reasonable on you! I have never worn an XS – you go girl!
