Garlic Lemonade

When I visited my midwife last week I had a small head cold but was there to address my insomnia that was really the trigger for my immune system weakening, the cold, the missing voice and all the phlegm in between points A to Z that ensued.

We went over all kinds of insomnia remedies beyond her advice of telling me to eat when I wake up just in case that didn’t work (which it has!). The most gentle was Wish Garden Sleepy Nights tea (there is a pregnancy formula) to a more intense combo of herbs based on my weight. We also talked about essential oils to breathe.

Then she wanted to get down to business about my cold and recommended a tincture to use in my neti pot.

Finally she gave me her best piece of cold-remedy care… GARLIC LEMONADE. She apparently drinks a lot of this during the cold/flu season to stay healthy while dealing with pregnant ladies of various stages of illnesses. She said it is great for me and is also good for kids… just add more honey (but not too much since the sugar is an immune suppressant).

So say ewww because I did, but yeah, now that I have had it, I gotta go with my midwife on this one. I actually like the taste. The next time I feel any cold symptoms coming on I will be doing this from the start.

GARLIC LEMONADE
Heat 1 qt. water to boiling and turn off heat. Add 4 cloves of coarsely chopped garlic to the hot water, cover, let steep for 30 minutes. Strain to remove garlic. Add the juice of 2 fresh squeezed lemons. Add 1 tbsp honey. Place in a quart jar and drink it through the day.

  1. Whoa. Ewwww, but I would definitely give this a try. As long as the ingredients individually aren't gross to me, I'll try just about any combination 🙂

Oh, I am definitely going to try this. Adding fresh garlic to my shopping list for tomorrow. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Sounds nasty. Tastes … surprisingly NOT nasty! I got to try this last night, dear readers, and it GUTTED my sinuses. If you knew how notoriously HORRIBLE my sinuses are, you would be UTTERLY AMAZED right now.

So just pretend you know the whole store and start being UTTERLY AMAZED.

    And then go make some!

  4. I usually start downing garlic capsules as soon as I feel any sort of grossness coming on. I think I'll have to give this a try next time. It does sound horrendous, but I know that garlic is awesome for kicking illnesses.

  5. I'm trying this tonight! I have a drink made of garlic that comes from the caribbean (I'm from Haiti) and minced raw garlic is strained with other herbs and it is hard to drink. It's like trying to drink something made of horseradish. ACK!
