Venus de Miles pumped up! #rideVenus

Venus-2014-BloggerBadges-KiaLast year the Venus de Miles annual fundraiser for Greenhouse Scholars did not take place in Colorado due to the flooding devastation that was experienced in mid-September. Last year was going to be my first year riding (finally not volunteering) for this race. I am back… and so is the race. Please take advantage of registering with a $5 discount with the code BodhiBear.

To kick off the event and get the riders psyched Venus de Miles held Venus Night Out gathering last month with an inspiring talk by Marianne Martin, winner of the 1984 womens Tour de France. TOUR DE FRANCE!!!

The evening was also an effort to highlight the Greenhouse Scholars program that is the beneficiary for funds raised from Venus de Miles.  It is the people who make it through the competitive process to be Greenhouse Scholars that are my motivation to ride.  Exceptional young people that are mentored beyond education.IMG_1524

Marianne was pretty remarkable as well.  She is a photographer in the Boulder-area and so extremely humble that people in attendance that have been her friend for a while did not even know she won the Tour de France in its first year of a women’s race.

Here are a few tidbits that she shared with all of us as we prepare for the 34, 51 or century distances on 23 August.

15 minutes is better than no minutes.

You know those days when you don’t want to get on the bike? Getting on the bike makes the difference.

Smart miles. Go hard. Rest.

Visualization! Visualize strength. Take the pain and make it a positive thing. Breathe into it so you know your body is working and part of the process.

Marianne rides a horse now. She was so effortlessly cool about her experience and truly motivating to put in the rides and make the effort.

Going For A Long Bike Ride

This 6th annual event is Sunday, 29 September 2013. If you have never done a large endurance event this is your event. If you are the most skilled cyclista this is your event. I have only ever participated as a volunteer and spectator in the past for this party on wheels as it has gone by and am thrilled to do it this year. I have been on a bike before (triathlons) but will be taking it slow leading up to the event. I had a kiddo three months ago and am not out to break any speed records or anything. Actually I am treating all my workouts for 2013 as endurance building with heart rate monitor training for 2014. My focus on this year is to have FUN FUN FUN as I use my body and spend precious time away from my family to train for anything. That is why this event is for me – the support and other participants make this a feel-good event. There are also plenty of group training rides posted via the Venus de Miles facebook page that I plan to take advantage of.

Venus de Miles is Colorado’s ONLY all-women’s road ride. It was originated by and benefits Greenhouse Scholars. Greenhouse Scholars helps to put young people through college and beyond. This is a Whole Person scholarship and mentorship program for high-performing, under-resourced college students. Venus de Miles brings together the cycling sisterhood and supports an inspiring, community-changing organization.

Last year 1300 riders of different cycling abilities, age groups, and home cities converged to tour Boulder county on two wheels, sample organic food, hula hoop at rest stops and take advantage of complimentary spa services. Really! All that during a ride, I am serious when I mentioned that this is a party on wheels.

I hope you consider joining me. The cost is $89 if you register by 1 Sept for any of the distances and requires a $75 fundraising minimum for Greenhouse Scholars. Bodhi Bear readers have access to a $5 registration discount code using bccokia. I will be posting on my blog and social channels about my training as well as opportunities for you to win an entry to join me.

Regardless if you enter or not I will be on two wheels a good deal in the next 11 weeks as I cross-train for other events and prep for this. How many of you are on bikes and want to get out and ride with me?

Disclosure: I am part of the Blogging Goddess program affiliated with Venus de Miles and have not been financially compensated for my involvement. I was offered some training goodies like a jersey and entry plus will be giving away an entry myself. All opinions expressed here are my own and I am insanely excited to be involved with such a community pillar as VDM.

So Much June Fun!

There is a lot going on these days.  Last week I had my first post-partum run with some of the ladies with my local Black Girls Run chapter.  I am gonna take on a Polar mentee soon – actually a good girlfriend who rocked a 5k recently and wants MORE!!  And I signed up for a big challenge for me, the Venus de Miles century.  I will be working with them and will be posting more details later this week when I get more press release information but for now there is a registration button on the sidebar and I can offer up readers a $5 off registration code bccokia.  I have four months to prepare for a 100-mile all-women bike event.  Wish me luck.

With my vlog I mentioned FITBLOGGIN next week.  Yep, next week.  My part is to wrangle speakers and put together Ignite Fitness.  At this point I cannot even express how ecstatic I am since people are working their butts off to put their best foots forward for the audience.

This week… Running (3.5, 5, and 6 miles), Dailey Method 3x, swimming 1-2x, bike commuting to the yoga studio and a fun ride, plus strength – functional with TRX.  Eating includes strawberry/watermelon gazpacho, Indian Coleslaw, tofu w/ peanut sauce, hummus, greek salad, spinach salad, eggs, breakfast for dinner, and anything else to clean out the fridge before our trip.

I am looking at my stupid, frenzied week.  Big things today are securing the space for a pre-Fitbloggin meet-up for Denver, submit my final entries for the Go Pro Mountain Games Click competition, finish images for an event I shot last week, and to get a handle on some of the domestic stuff I want done before our PNW trip.  However there are a number of personal notes I owe people.  I plan to get a big jump on thank you notes while on the road next week.  Before that though I am going to push myself to get three care packages out to loved ones this week.  Nothing extravagant but notes of love, cookies, and pictures.  The real essence of heart.  Also an excuse to bake before we are hot in the 90s again.

I am also going to challenge YOU to walk away from email and the digital world and write a love letter to someone including yourself.  A post-it note.  Some IRL gesture that is tangible to show you care.

One last thing – Mamavation is looking for moms for their next campaign. They are transitioning to a more holistic approach to wellness so there is no weight requirement and the campaign will focus on reducing toxin exposure through a partnership with Healthy Child. Consider applying because there are all kinds of perks beyond education for the campaign participants including NaturePedic mattresses for your children.
